How to prepare a polyester fiber purchasing specification

Start with the finished product

A useful fiber inquiry explains what the material will become. A pillow, a molded acoustic layer and a needle-punched felt should not begin with the same selection questions. Include the end use and the production process, even when you already know a trade name for the material.

Describe the material clearly

Record the fiber type, structure, linear density, cut length, finish and color. Keep the unit with each value. If you are matching an existing material, a sample and a specification sheet are more useful than a photograph alone. Images can help explain appearance or an application, but they cannot establish a complete fiber grade.

Identify what the sample needs to demonstrate

Separate your observation from your acceptance criterion. “Feels soft” is an observation. A comparison against an approved sample, at an agreed fill weight and construction, gives a more useful basis for discussion. Nonwoven development should consider the blend, web formation and bonding method alongside the fiber.

Include functional requirements early

For a bonding fiber, explain the intended thermal process and construction. For a flame-retardant requirement, identify the test method and final assembly. For recycled material, specify the composition and documentation you need. These details affect which grade and supporting information should be discussed.

A compact inquiry checklist

  • End product and production process.
  • Material type, fineness, length, finish and color.
  • Existing sample or specification, where available.
  • Trial quantity and planned order quantity.
  • Evaluation method and required documentation.
  • Packing preference and shipment destination.
